Visual effects can be seen as a similar process for games and movies as Doom Vfx artist Wirginia Romanowska explains. Rendering takes 16 milliseconds per frame for a game and can take several hours for one frame to render for a movie. Games require visual effects to look good from all angles whereas movies only have to focus on one angle for the shot. Players can move around the environment so the effects need to be able to see a convincing effect from anywhere in game. Particle systems consist of several emitters that are put together to make an intended effect. Each emitter makes up one element of the particle system. Vfx needs to trigger non-verbal language that hints toward what the player will experience next within the game—danger or safe zone. It also is what makes the world believable to the player. With no elements that hint toward life, the player would not feel as though the are in a world and would likely become detached from the game.
