Interactive Experience at Becker College’s Barrett Center
Instillation Type:
Physical, Temporary
Location:
Front Staircase, VR Lab
Time of Day:
Night
Concept:
People being led toward the VR lab in physical space while using surroundings that change with the movement of the person walking through the space.
Purpose:
This instillation would essentially guide people from the real world into an imaginary one where everything becomes more relaxed where the mind can run free without constraint of reality.
Description of Piece/Work:
Movement sensors would be used to trigger the lighting throughout the area. As someone approaches the space, the lights turn off in the stairwell. Once the door is opened, lights placed around the doorway and toward the stairs become lit and flicker/pulsate like fireflies. These are the guides that would transform reality into fantasy. This is very much like as if one was falling into a dream state. As one moves toward the stairs, the lights light a path which is lighting the ground. The first few steps are lit as just a solid warm light proving the staircase is only what it seems. Over the progression of the ascent up the staircase, those warm lights fade into three different shades of green lights that wrap around one another to make vines. Dim lights of green, blue, and purple would help light the steps to the summit. This is where the lights would fade out and only leave blue and purple lighting around the floor to make movement within the area safe. The ceiling would have lights that fade slowly in and out making a sky full of stars. Lights around the edges of the ceiling and floor would hint the way toward the door of the VR lab. Once in the lab, the room has the night sky projected onto the ceiling with only feint lights on the floor in each corner.
Significance:
The whole reason for this experience is so that anyone walking through would be drawn to the VR lab. Using the idea of set design and human curiosities, whomever comes through the area would feel the need to follow the lights into their dream.
